Discovering the World, Grain by Grain
The International Sand Museum

Preservation - Education - Research
Herein is a General Project Proposal for the creation of a revolutionary
concept combining a natural history, hands on, and study/research
museum. The International Sand Museum (ISM) will be dedicated to
the exhibit, education, preservation, and study of sand and its related
areas. It will be the first indoor and outdoor museum of its kind in the
world.
The purpose and direction of this museum is:
* To educate the general public about our reliance on sand.
* To present the diverse and significant roles sand has and continues
to play in our lives.
* To study sand's continuing impact on our earth and other planets,
and its development in new products and applications.
* To share information and specimens with others interested in the
study of this substance.

The International Sand Museum will act as a repository and research
facility to federal, state, and town governments and their agencies. It
will provide assistance by making available whenever possible the
sharing and loaning of samples, information, and other material to
universities and other institutions, to secondary schools, science and
nature centers, to museums, industry, other institutions and private
research individuals. The ISM will also preserve, educate, and network
all those interested in our geologic heritage and will promote the
beauty, science, and importance of one of earth's most precious
materials.

The ISM will educate people on how our planet works with and evolves
around sand, and how to understand and respect our environment.
Through its exhibits, speakers, and programs, including traveling
outreach programs, the ISM will educate both young and old on one
of natures less appreciated and lesser known wonders. It will network
sand studies and research activities with an ongoing and worldwide
database. The ISM will provide forums for activities with an ongoing
and worldwide database. The ISM will provide forums for encouraging
imaginations, for stretching perceptions, and promoting and aiding all
interested parties and institutions by linking information and people
together.
The ISM will promote and enhance an appreciation and awareness through a sand experience. It will support and stimulate excellence
and innovation, and strengthen the capacity to serve as an effective global resource in promoting public understanding and awareness with that of science and technology.
There will be dozens of educational exhibits and hands on activities
to effectively demonstrate to all ages the magic of this important and
vastly overlooked material. As the visitor journeys through the
galleries and exhibit rooms, they will quickly become aware of the
enormous diversity and use of sand.
The ISM will also be supported by it's parent organization, The
Psammology Group and its division of the International Sand
Collector Society.
