Basic Guidelines for Trading Sand

Labelling

Minimum information:
Location name, country, and name of collector/provider of sample.

Additional information:
State/Province of sample, area (low/high tide line, berm, dune, river edge, etc.), GPS information, etc.

Size and Type of Samples

Most trading samples are 2 Tablespoons (30 milliliters). If larger samples are needed please let the provider know. Also, if you are looking for particular type of sample (beach, desert, river, foreign, biogenic, etc.) please let the provider know in advance.

International Samples

On the customs form, it is a good idea to note the samples as:

“Geologic Samples for Scientific Study – No Commercial Value”

Communication & Tracking

If you receive samples/request please respond promptly as possible. If you send samples and have tracking number please provide it to the person receiving the samples. Communication is key to a successful trade.

Packaging

Make sure your samples are sealed and properly secured in a sturdy box. It is a good idea to put both the sender’s name and receiver’s name inside the package. Note: If there is sand leaking out of a box, it may be destroyed by the postal system due to safety concerns.

Several labeled bags containing different types of sand or soil samples from various locations, including details like coordinates, place names, and dates.
